Rochelle Wisoff-Fields-Addicted to Purple hosts the flash fiction challenge called
Friday Fictioneers!
Take the challenge to write a piece of flash fiction in 100 words using the weekly picture prompt.
At sunset, the red sky reflects, as ripples form across the water. The movement, as people jump in, disturbs its stillness.
The reflection from the boat, casts shadows and creates a gloom over the pretty lake. I’ve been coming here since a little girl with Jen. I reminisce about the fun afternoons as we walked Penny the spaniel, around the seven mile perimeter of the lake, swimming by the bridge and catching tadpoles.
Today, a darkness overshadows the joy. Turning away, I walk toward the car as I glance at the white, police tent, covering the body of my friend.
Genre – Thriller/Crime (100 words)
Dear Madison,
Poignant and wistful story. I only hope the narrator isn’t the murderer, but I don’t get that feel from this. Nicely done.
Shalom,
Rochelle

Very descriptive and evocative piece, Madison. Guess all is not well between your MC and Jen.

Maybe it is and its where Jen wanted to visit before she ended her life? There are many possible scenarios! But which is the correct one?

As long as you leave it to the readers’ imagination, every scenario is perfect.

Exactly! I love hearing what readers have taken from my flash fiction.

Ouch. That’s really sad. But the sunset does remind us that life goes on. Not that the reminder helps at that time

Most of my flash fiction have a slightly dark side! I like to mix it up by creating a false sense of security! 😏

Oh, I was just waiting for it to turn bad and it didn’t disappoint, quite a kick at the end. Well done.

You set such a beautiful scene and skillfully punctured it with the hint of murder. Nicely done.

It certainly could! Idea for a future novel maybe?

It’s very hard to ever look at a place the same when something bad has occurred.

Yes, it taints the scenery.

Loved the nostalgia the opening creates, and the twist with the end. 🙂 Definitely more to the story, I’m sure.

You write this with authenticity, created by the detail of the description of childhood walks (the name and breed of the dog, the tadpoles, the bridge, the fact that it’s a seven mile walk). By describing the memory so carefully, you prime the reader to accept the remainder of the story as truthful. That’s good writing – well done!

That was beautifully written and so very sad at the end. I, too, did not feel she was guilty.
